On 29 November, MPs will debate and vote on assisted suicide legislation. The Catholic Church in England and Wales is encouraging you to oppose this legislation by writing to your MP, and many of you have done so.
Thank you so much if you have.
In recent weeks there have been positive developments. The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has changed his mind and pledged to vote against a change in the law.
He fears that people would not have genuine ‘choice’ because hospice care is in such a poor state in our country. The Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is also opposed. This means that two Ministers who would be responsible for implementing an assisted suicide law are against it.
In Wales, on 23 October, the Welsh Parliament – the Senedd – debated a motion calling for ‘assisted dying’. This motion was rejected. This means that any move to legalise assisted suicide at Westminster will be against the wishes of the Welsh Parliament.
There is still time to write to MPs and ask them to oppose Kim Leadbeater’s Bill. If you have not done this, we encourage you to use the QR code (right) or go to the Right to Life UK website and make your voice known.
If you have already acted, perhaps you could encourage a friend to do so?
Can we encourage you to share your personal stories as you write to politicians? We cannot emphasise enough how powerful this can be for those you are writing to.
And keep praying.
