Please Help to Preserve Our Cathedral for Current and Future Generations

We kindly ask for your support in helping to maintain our Cathedral by donating. Your contribution will help with the necessary repairs and maintenance, ensuring this sacred space remains a vital part of our city’s community.

We have a target of £8,000,000

Our beautiful Cathedral, over a century old, stands as a testament to our community’s history and faith. However, despite its magnificent appearance, it urgently requires essential repairs and maintenance.

With limited external funding available, we rely on the generosity of our community to preserve this sacred space for future generations. Your donation, no matter the size, can make a significant difference.

Our Main Projects

This year we need to further reduce Fire and Safety Risks in the Cathedral and Narthex, and then repair the Transept roofs. We are unlikely to receive further grants from sources that have already given more than our share, so we really do need your help!

Narthex Fire Safety

As it approaches its twelfth year, we’re planning to replace fire safety sensors and repair elements of the building to ensure ongoing protection for all.

Cathedral Safety

With growing attendance at our evening events, we’re upgrading escape lighting for better visibility in case of a power outage.

Target £55,000

Lead Roofs

Cracks in the lead roofs are causing water damage to the timber structure. Urgent repairs are needed to prevent further damage.

Our Progress

The care and maintenance of this marvellous Cathedral is a continuous process. Every five years the building is inspected by a specialist architect (this is called a Quinquennial Inspection or QI) and a list of recommended works is produced. The most recent Quinquennial Inspection identified work of varying urgency that totalled over £8million.

Since that inspection we have spent over £1 million on urgent repair work to the Transept roof, gutters, electric circuits, and the refurbishment of the toilets and drains. We have also renovated the Chapel of the Precious Blood and renovated three stained-glass windows. This work was funded through incredibly kind and very generous donations, along with grants from Historic England, All Churches Trust and Biffa. The Diocese provided the necessary funds to ensure Cathedral House meets current fire regulations and remove asbestos.

To ensure the future of the Cathedral we are reliant upon the generosity of visitors, members of our parish, and people of good who would like to help preserve and enhance the Cathedral.
